JANUS Research Group is looking for an Atmospheric Modeling Scientist with expertise in the following areas:

• Running, verifying, and analyzing output from numerical weather prediction models such as the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) and/or the Model for Prediction across Scales (MPAS). Experience with WRF-Chem, its use in driving dispersion (e.g., HYSPLIT) and air quality (e.g., CMAQ) models, and customization of internal model code a plus.
• Retrieval and analysis of satellite data, including trace gas retrievals and data from passive microwave sensors.
• Proficiency in applying machine learning (ML) techniques to atmospheric science datasets to detect patterns, predict atmospheric phenomena, and interpret results in the context of physical processes.

As a new member of Janus’s globally recognized Earth science team, you will be able to take advantage of opportunities for collaboration across our established research programs, including:

• Understanding of convective processes and exploration of microphysical impacts
• Photochemical and Lagrangian modeling of the sources and sinks of air pollutants
• The application of active and passive remote sensing to the monitoring of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants
• Detailed validation of cloud, precipitation, and radiative transfer processes using remotely sensed data
• Global Navigation Satellite System Radio Occultation (GNSS-RO) retrievals of temperature, water vapor, and cloud properties

In addition, you will be provided both individual and team mentorship to develop your own externally funded research program. The ideal candidate will publish high impact peer-reviewed papers, give presentations at scientific conferences, write proposals and reports, and keep up with relevant scientific, computing, and observational advances.

About the Day-to-Day Responsibilities of the Role

• Contribute to ongoing research using Lagrangian modeling to understand sources and sinks of trace gases and other air pollutants, through independent completion of both externally and self-directed research tasks.
• Expand existing research interests and capabilities beyond this initial project’s immediate goals.
• Regularly develop innovative techniques to apply existing satellite and model datasets, or create new observational datasets, to answer scientific questions.
• Show adaptability in performing research tasks outside their immediate research area as needed with minimal spin-up time.
• Develop their own externally funded research program through research grant proposals and contracts with non-profit and industry clients.

• Ph.D. in atmospheric science or related fields.
• Direct experience as described in Job Description above. Experience in graduate school will be evaluated if it was a major focus of the candidate’s dissertation.
• Excellent programming skills in Fortran, Python, and/or other common languages.
• Skilled in scientific communication, including writing and public speaking.
• Willing to travel to scientific conferences to present research and actively engage with the scientific community.
• Works well independently and in a diverse team.
• Strong leadership and people skills.
• Able to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
